Retailability replaces Excel-based finance processes with IDU across 430 stores.

Our reporting has been simplified and we can prepare month-end accounts much faster, with peace of mind that the output comes from a robust system.

Malcolm Smith, CFO, Retailability

Founded in 1984, Retailability (Pty) Ltd is a South African retail group operating the Legit, Beaver Canoe, and Style brands across more than 430 stores in six Southern African countries — South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, and Zambia. That geographic reach is not incidental to the finance function; it makes multi-currency transactions and multiple ledgers an inescapable daily reality — and the impetus for bringing IDU-Concept into the business.

Operating across that footprint placed demands on the finance team that their existing systems could not meet. SAGE 300 lacked the budgeting functionality and reporting flexibility required for a multi-currency, multi-ledger environment — and the gap was filled with spreadsheets. The Excel-based processes that resulted were time-consuming and error-prone, requiring manual consolidation across ledgers and currencies with no reliable mechanism to catch mistakes before they propagated. Month-end reporting was slow and frustrating as a consequence, leaving leadership without the timely, consolidated insight needed to make confident decisions.

After an extensive evaluation process, Retailability selected IDU-Concept in 2018 as the platform to replace their spreadsheet-dependent workflows. The implementation followed a deliberate sequence: the Reporting Module was deployed first, giving the finance team an immediate foothold of reliable, structured output, before the Budgeting Module was introduced to address the Excel frustrations that had accumulated across planning cycles. Both phases were delivered on time and within budget — IDU's consulting team providing professional, responsive support throughout, adapting the platform to Retailability's specific multi-currency, multi-ledger requirements. Being cloud-based, IDU-Concept gave Retailability a foundation built to sustain that complexity across their six-country operation.

Reporting was simplified, and the finance team could prepare month-end accounts faster — with the confidence that outputs came from a stable, reliable system rather than a chain of manually maintained spreadsheets. The Budgeting Module removed the Excel frustrations that had slowed planning cycles, giving Retailability a financial management process that was accurate and built to scale alongside their multi-country footprint. The platform was configured to handle their specific multi-currency, multi-ledger environment, and IDU's consulting team remained professional and responsive at every stage of the engagement.

Malcolm Smith, CFO of Retailability, described the outcome in his own words: "Our reporting has been simplified and we can prepare month-end accounts much faster, with peace of mind that the output comes from a robust system. The Budgeting Module removed the frustrations of Excel, and the IDU team has been highly professional and responsive. I recommend IDU without reservation."

"Partnering with Retailability meant delivering a solution tailored to their multi-currency, multi-ledger environment. Seeing their finance team move from slow, error-prone processes to streamlined reporting and confident budgeting is exactly the kind of transformation IDU is built to achieve." – Margie Whitten, Director, IDU
