Merchants
Merchants moves from spreadsheet chaos to real-time budget control.

“The implementation of IDU-Concept has resulted in a paradigm shift in our approach to budgeting. We now provide internal customers with the information they require.”
— Financial Director, Merchants
Merchants is a business process outsourcing and customer experience company, part of the Dimension Data group, that delivers contact centre solutions to blue-chip organisations across the globe. With 30 years of operating history behind them, they bring considerable depth to customer management — running complex, high-volume interactions on behalf of clients who demand consistency and performance at scale.
Beneath that operational scale, Merchants' budgeting process was running on a combination of a basic application and disconnected spreadsheets. Pulling numbers together across multiple business units was slow, error-prone, and depended almost entirely on the finance team to aggregate and report. That concentration of effort in one function created a persistent bottleneck — and left business unit managers without meaningful access to their own budget data. Because managers had no direct way to contribute to or interrogate the numbers, accountability sat with finance rather than with the people closest to the costs. Decision-making slowed. Transparency across the organisation stalled. It held the business at arm's length from its own financial picture — the problem IDU-Concept Financial Budgeting and Reporting was brought in to solve.
Writing all budget data to a single central database ended the spreadsheet fragmentation — but the structural change ran deeper. Merchants' budget data now aggregated in real time across four levels — cost centre, regional, divisional, and executive — as managers captured their figures, rather than at the end of a manual collection cycle driven by finance. Business unit managers were given direct ownership of their own budgets under a bottom-up model, shifting accountability away from the finance team and towards the people closest to the costs, and improving the accuracy of data captured at source. Non-financial users gained on-demand access to general ledger transactions — detail that had previously required a finance intermediary to surface. The platform is also designed to flex as Merchants' needs evolve, without requiring re-implementation.
"Merchants embraced IDU to transform budgeting from a finance-only exercise into a culture of ownership and accountability across the business."
— Mark Sayle, Account Manager, IDU
Budgets now consolidate in real time as managers capture their figures. A single central database replaced the spreadsheet fragmentation, giving the whole organisation one authoritative source for budget data. Business unit leaders own and manage their numbers directly, with accountability sitting at the point closest to the costs. And non-financial users across Merchants access detailed general ledger transactions on demand, with the information they need to make decisions available the moment they need it.
"The implementation of IDU-Concept has resulted in a paradigm shift in our approach to budgeting. We now provide internal customers with the information they require thanks to a dependable on-demand reporting solution."
