The Jabulani Portfolio
Jabulani Portfolio replaces broken Excel budgeting with centralised financial clarity.

“Once they start using IDU, they realise it's actually very easy to use. The dashboards and ratio tracking help them tremendously and make life easier for everyone.”
— Delene Odendaal, Financial Director, Jabulani Portfolio
IDU-Concept is now the budgeting and forecasting backbone for The Jabulani Portfolio — a luxury safari lodge and conservation group in Hoedspruit, Limpopo, whose revenue directly funds South Africa's first dedicated elephant orphanage. Their operations span Jabulani Safari Lodge, experiences tied to the Jabulani Herd elephants, and HERD — the Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation & Development centre. Proceeds from tourism — guests at the lodge and related experiences — help sustain both the conservation of elephants and community upliftment.
Budgeting across a hospitality operation like Jabulani's is structurally difficult. Many costs move directly with bed nights — food, consumables, guest experiences — while others are fixed or spike unpredictably around seasons and public holidays. Tracking those two cost behaviours in parallel, across multiple revenue streams, demands a process that holds its shape under pressure.
Excel did not. As budget files were distributed to managers across the business, formulas broke. Versions diverged. Numbers that should have summed no longer reconciled. When a workable budget was eventually agreed, it then had to be manually rekeyed into Pastel Partner — adding yet another round of handling, and another opportunity for error, before the numbers could be used.
In 2022, Jabulani Portfolio implemented IDU-Concept as its budgeting, forecasting, and reporting platform. The spreadsheet infrastructure was replaced entirely — a single, centralised system took over where a web of emailed files had failed.
Dashboards and cost-ratio tracking were configured to give non-financial managers clear, direct visibility of their expenses and income streams — without requiring them to interpret a spreadsheet or request a report from finance.
The system felt more complex than Excel at first. Some training was needed. Confidence followed — and quickly, once the team began using the system day-to-day. When questions arose during the bedding-in period, IDU's support team resolved them within hours, keeping the finance team moving without delays.
Geoff ten Oever, Account Manager at IDU, describes the company's approach:
"We view every customer as a partner. At IDU, it's about more than implementing a system, it's about understanding their business, helping them streamline processes, and providing the ongoing support and advice they need to succeed. Our relationship doesn't end at installation; we grow with them as their needs evolve."

Tasks that previously took days in Excel or manual reconciliation are now completed with a single click. Broken formulas and the repeated manual edits that followed them have been eliminated, freeing the team to focus on higher-value work. Non-financial managers across the business gained genuine ownership of their numbers — dashboards and ratio metrics gave them clarity that a shared spreadsheet never could. And when questions arose, queries were resolved within hours, keeping the finance team moving rather than waiting.
