Corobrik cuts budget capture to one week across 15 factories.

The greatest advantage IDU-Concept has provided has been the ability to build our budget from the bottom up.

Founded in 1902 in Durban, Corobrik is South Africa's leading manufacturer and distributor of clay bricks, pavers, and allied building products. With 15 factories and the country's most extensive distribution network, the company serves customers across every region of the country and exports to markets as far as the United States, Japan, Dubai, and across Africa. At that scale, coordinating a credible annual budget is no small undertaking — and for years, spreadsheets were simply not up to the task.

Corobrik's budgeting process mirrored the shape of the business itself — sprawling, multi-layered, and pulled in several directions at once. Figures had to reconcile across 15 factories, more than 25 retail centres, multiple companies and currencies. Seasonal swings in construction demand added a further layer of complexity that flat spreadsheet grids could not absorb. The approach was top-down: targets set at factory level and pushed downward through every tier of the organisation. Sales and operational managers received numbers they had no hand in building, with no way to interrogate the assumptions behind them or adapt to conditions on the ground. Visibility was thin; flexibility was absent. IDU-Concept's platform would ultimately replace that process entirely.

In 2003, Corobrik implemented IDU-Concept's Sales Planning and Reporting Modules across the business. The shift was structural: budgeting moved from top-down to bottom-up, with managers now building sales budgets per region, sales office, representative, and product rather than receiving imposed targets from above. Automatic calculations handled sales revenue, cost of sales, and transport costs — removing the manual reconciliation work that had slowed every previous cycle. The web-based platform accommodated multiple companies, currencies, and product levels within a single process, and carried the flexibility to reflect seasonal variations in construction demand. Budget capture across 15 factories and more than 25 retail centres was completed in a single week.

A partner in success

Budget capture across the full network was reduced from weeks to one week. Bottom-up budgeting by representative and product increased both the accuracy of forecasts and managers' ownership of the figures they submitted. Capacity planning across 15 factories gained a reliable, bottom-up foundation, and financial insights became more accurate and timely across the organisation. Reporting extended across multiple companies, currencies, and seasonal demand patterns without the manual effort that had previously consumed each cycle.

"The greatest advantage IDU-Concept has provided has been the ability to build our budget from the bottom up. Budgeting for more than 25 retail centres and numerous factories is complex, but the system has relieved us of that stress."
