ABOUT MOMENTUM
Momentum Group Limited, now MMI Group Limited, is a subsidiary of MMI Holdings, formed through the 2010 merger of Metropolitan and Momentum. As South Africa’s third‑largest life insurance group, MMI has a 122‑year underwriting history and is listed on the JSE.
THE BUSINESS CHALLENGE
Momentum previously relied on an in‑house software program that was not web‑based and could not be rolled out to its national branches. This made budgeting, forecasting, and reporting time‑consuming, fragmented, and difficult to manage. Consolidation was inefficient, transparency was limited, and accountability across divisions was lacking.
The finance team needed a user‑friendly system that could streamline the annual budgeting process, improve accessibility for budget officials, and foster greater responsibility and ownership. With limited budget and tight time constraints, Momentum required a solution that was both efficient and cost‑effective.

THE SOLUTION
Momentum implemented IDU‑Concept in early 2012, with a customised module designed to accommodate remuneration per employee — a critical requirement for their unique budgeting approach. The system was integrated into the core application and rolled out to 27 users across 43 branches in just six weeks, in time for the annual budgeting cycle.
IDU‑Concept’s intuitive, web‑based design provided transparency, accountability, and secure access for managers to their relevant cost centres. Within 12 months, the rollout expanded to 180 budget users and 190 MIS users. The solution increased departmental involvement, improved control, and created a stronger sense of ownership, enabling Momentum to achieve faster, more accurate, and more inclusive budgeting.
